Skylight Media Photography Styles

My photography packages can provide you with a few different styles of photos. Here’s some examples to help you choose the right package for your needs. Plus a little insight into my process for capturing these photos.

All photos are delivered beautifully and tastefully edited (in my Skylight Media ‘bright and natural’ style) via your own personal digital gallery, where they are available for you to download in both high and low resolution. I only deliver edited photos and wont provide ‘raw’ images.

A note on the number of photos in each package:

You will usually receive all of the shots I have taken during the photo shoot because property photography is very slow and precise, I rarely over-shoot. There won’t be any extra images for you to purchase, as you may have experienced with family photos or weddings. Composition is perfected ‘in camera’ and one single photo can take 5-10 minutes to capture, sometimes even longer. The number of photos indicated on your chosen package is the maximum number of photos that I can produce in the allocated time.

If you think you’ll need more photos than what’s stated in your package, or a different style of photos, please let me know ahead of your shoot so I can upgrade your package and allocate more time for the shoot. Please get in touch about this as soon as possible because I may have a full schedule that day and unable to accommodate any changes / extra time.

What's a listing photo?

  • Beautiful, bright, wide angle shots.
  • Taken in landscape format.
  • No extra styling / staging involved by the photographer, these shots are taken ‘as found’ by the photographer.

A listing photo is perfect for advertising the property on booking sites, websites and real estate sales platforms. These photos show a clear view and layout of a room, a space or the front and back of the home.

This is the preferred style of photos for platforms such as Airbnb, booking.com or realestate.com.au.

These photos help potential guests or buyers to view the property clearly and decide if it’s the right place for them.

I can usually capture listing photos with 1-2 different sized lenses, nearly always with a tripod, and I will often take these photos at the start of the shoot as they give me time to assess each space for good detail shots later on.

Fun fact: lots of people think that this style of ‘wide angle’ photo makes a space appear bigger than it really is, when in fact these photos are exactly what a normal eyesight would see from that same position in the room. Beautiful isn’t it!

What's a detail photo?

  • Close-ups of special features.
  • Views of surrounding areas from windows or balconies (beach, forest, town).
  • Taken in both landscape and portrait format.
  • No extra styling / staging involved by the photographer, these shots are taken ‘as found’ by the photographer.

A detail photo focusses on the unique features of your place. This could be a beautiful table centrepiece, seats around a fire pit, the view of the beach through the treetops, the kayaks in the shed, beautiful plants in the garden, a cute entry sign, the neighbouring cows in the paddock – and so on.

These photos are perfect to mix in with your listing photos on booking platforms to add variety and interest and are especially great for attracting your ideal guests on social media.

Detail photos take a little more time for me to capture as I will take some time to explore the property looking for the best features to capture. I may use 3-4 different sized lenses, sometimes with a tripod and sometimes without.

What are Lived-In or Lifestyle PHOtos?

(Available on request, further fees apply) These photos show what it might be like to settle in and really use the different areas of the property during a stay.

  • A mix of Listing and Detail style shots, in both landscape or portrait format.
  • I can provide some extra styling or staging, using items found at the property.

 Examples include:

  • A bottle of wine, glasses, plates and platters on an outdoor table
  • Coffee mugs, coffee pot and magazines on a table in the garden
  • Wine and a puzzle or game on the coffee table in front of the fire
  • A bed with sheets and blankets a bit messed up for a ‘lived in’ look plus books and a tea cup
  • The kitchen with cookbooks and pots and utensils around the stove top, maybe lemons or herbs from the garden
  • A picnic setting
  • Beach towels and toys by the pool

I will only use items found at the property and will never introduce props or extra items that your guests wouldn’t normally find during their stay.

These shots take the most time as they require the initial set up, playing around with the position of everything to get it just right for the angle seen in the camera (often very different to what looks good in real life!) and then I may use a  number of different sized lenses to get the right view.

drone (aerial) photos

These photos capture the property from the air in context to surrounding attractions such as the beach, forest, farmland or town. Also great to show the entire front or back elevation of raised home or properties on steep hillsides. These photos can look very striking and interesting and they help potential guests to ‘place’ the home in the landscape.

I am an accredited RPA operator, flying one of the best drones in the industry for beautiful property photography from the air.

Flying the drone is not always possible, there are sometimes airspace restrictions that make it illegal to fly a drone over your property – for example near airstrips or when there is a bush-fire or planned burn off nearby. Or the weather may not be favourable – a little bit of wind is ok, but a lot of wind and any chance of rain is not ok.

But when it is possible, the results can be spectacular…

Sunset / Twilight Photos

(Available on request, further fees apply) Taking photos over the sunset and twilight hour can give beautiful, striking images, perfect for showing off amazing outdoor areas such as landscaped gardens, pools, entertaining areas, fire pits or surrounding attractions and views such as forests or farmland.

There is usually just enough time within the sunset/twilight hour to capture 3-4 different scenes or views. Photos of the whole property inside and outside during this hour are usually not possible (too rushed) and my preference is to shoot interiors during daylight anyway for the best results. So for sunset / twilight shoots I will focus on the exteriors of the property.

Sunset and twilight photography requires a lot of attention as I am working to capture the best shots in a small window of time. The clock is ticking as the sun disappears and the light softens, and then after it’s dipped below the horizon there’s a very short-lived twilight (dusk) where each photo takes time with much longer exposures.

The shoot will be over about half an hour after sunset.
